Happy to see another Snicket fan! Both movie and Netflix show take a number of liberties with the books, and of course, Snicket's narration can only really be experienced in text, so I can recommend the books as a rewarding experience of their own. As far as adaptations go, which did you prefer, the movie or the show?
I see you've already discovered my comparison thread between Gorey and Snicket. If you're considering taking the plunge to look into the work of Edward Gorey, Perigee Books have published a series of collections of his work, starting with "Amphigorey", which also makes for the best entry point into his oeuvre. The individual books/stories within are very short, so it's easy to get into them, but they invite longer ruminations on their mysterious contents. Btw, Daniel Handler aka Lemony Snicket has always touted Gorey's The Blue Aspic as an early childhood favorite book of his; On the other hand, The Gashlycrumb Tinies may be Gorey's most famous work and definitely shares Snicket's dry and dark humor.
